Autumn 2024

Adicco BhikkhuNews

The monastic community at Amaravati is now entering the last part of the rainy season, with the final day of vassa, Pavāraṇā Day, falling this year on Thursday, the 17th of October. As is customary, the community will observe a week of group practice, from 12th October until the morning of the 17th, with periods of sitting and walking meditation woven throughout each day.

Amaravati’s Kathina festival will be held on Sunday, the 10th of November. Further details will be made available soon at amaravati.org/kathina2024.

For those who have visited recently, you may have noticed the nearing completion of the new sala. We remain hopeful that it will be ready in time for the Kathina ceremony. Until then, we kindly ask that visitors refrain from entering the construction area, even if it seems more accessible.

Since the beginning of Vassa, Luang Por Sumedho has been sharing Dhamma reflections on each half-moon day at 3pm, and it is expected that he will carry on with this fortnightly schedule for the time being. Please check our online calendar for any updates or cancellations.

There are also two Sunday Talks remaining, one of which will be offered by Ajahn Amaro, and another by Ajahn Rocano, a senior monk from Nepal who has been training in Thailand and living at Amaravati for some time.

Finally, our Saturday meditation workshops continue, each Saturday at 2pm, with the exception of the 9th of November, when residents will be engaged in preparations for the Kathina festival.

During the final phase of his solitary retreat, Ajahn Amaro was invited to represent the World Tipitaka Foundation at the Vatican. The foundation has, in recent decades, completed one of the most precise renderings of the Pali Canon and has been presenting copies to institutions around the world. As part of this endeavour, Ajahn Amaro had the opportunity to meet with Vatican officials and share a brief but meaningful exchange with Pope Francis.

This year’s retreat will take place on Saturday, the 23rd of November 2024, from 9.30am to 5pm. Young people aged between 13 and 19 who want to practise Buddhism together are warmly invited.

Over the past months, our photo team has added new albums documenting recent events, including Luang Por Sumedho’s 90th birthday and the ongoing progress of the new sala. These collections can be consulted on the photo gallery section of this website.

May all beings be at ease,
The resident community at Amaravati
